Cat Body Language Guide: Decoding Feline Signals

Cats communicate through subtle cues like ear angles, pupil size, tail motion, and whisker placement. Learn to read them.

Cats have a reputation for being mysterious, but their body language is incredibly detailed. By observing tail shapes, ears, and facial muscles, you can read their mood and avoid scratches or bites.

Tail Language

  • Upright, question mark curve: Happy, friendly, and confident.
  • Tucked close or wrapped tightly: Fearful, defensive, or cold.
  • Flicking or whipping: Agitated, annoyed, or highly stimulated.
  • Puffed/Bottle brush tail: Terrified, angry, or trying to look large.

Ear Positions

  • Pointing forward: Curious, relaxed, or hunting.
  • Flattened/Airplane ears: Angry, terrified, or defensive.
  • Twitching/Turning: Listening intently, alert to surroundings.

Eyes and Whiskers

  • Slow blink: A sign of trust, often called a 'cat kiss'.
  • Constricted slit pupils: Content, angry, or focused.
  • Whiskers forward: Playful, excited, or curious.
